An algal bloom is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in an aquatic system. Algal bloom may occur in freshwater as well as marine environment, Algal bloom concentration may reach millions of cells per milliliters. Algal bloom is offer green but they can also be other colours such as yellow, brown or red depending on the species of algae. The growth of marine phytoplankton is generally limited by the availability of nitrates and phosphates which can (toxic and nontoxic) be abundant in coastal upwelling zones.

The types of nitrates and phosphates available in the systems are also a factor, since phytoplankton can grow at different rates depending on the relative abundance of these substances (ammonia, urea, nitrates, ion). A variety of other nutrients sources can also play an important role in affecting algal bloom formation including iron, silica or carbon.

Algae is very important to maintain the eco system in aqua culture, but it should not be a harmful one for the animals like shrimps, prawns and fishes. Due to excess nutrients in the ponds, especially in reduced exchange system in the pond is getting over blooming of algae more and more. This leads to BOD in increasing level in ponds. Scum is also coming more and regularly; this leads to excess algal debris and black-gills. Excess algae create foams in later days of culture in shrimp ponds.

Anyhow the over blooming in the ponds should be controlled and to be maintained as much as we need in the eco system in aqua culture. The phyto brites maintain and controls the Algae population in the ponds and gives better eco system in the aqua culture system.
